The No. 1 seed completes a commanding week in Chiasso, defeating Lisa Pigato 6-2 6-3 in the singles final.
Chiasso, Switzerland – Maria Timofeeva lived up to her top-seed status in emphatic fashion, capturing the Axion Open 2026 title with a composed and authoritative victory over Italy’s Lisa Pigato, the No. 2 seed, in the singles final at Tennis Club Chiasso.
Timofeeva prevailed 6-2 6-3, closing a high-quality week with another performance built on clarity, depth and competitive control. In a final that brought together the two highest-ranked seeds in the draw, the Uzbek player set the tone early, applying constant pressure from the baseline and denying Pigato the time needed to fully impose her own rhythm.
From the opening stages, Timofeeva looked sharp in the return games, stepping inside the court whenever the opportunity arose and using her depth to push Pigato behind the baseline. The first set quickly moved in her direction: her ball speed, court positioning and ability to redirect rallies allowed her to dictate the tempo, while Pigato was often forced into defensive positions before she could develop her patterns.
The 6-2 opening set reflected Timofeeva’s cleaner execution in the key exchanges. She was particularly effective in taking control early in rallies, keeping the ball heavy through the middle phases of the point and accelerating at the right moments. Pigato tried to vary height and pace, but the top seed remained disciplined, giving away little and making strong choices under pressure.
The Italian responded with greater resistance in the second set, looking to protect her service games more aggressively and stretch the rallies. Yet Timofeeva’s consistency remained the decisive factor. She managed the important points with poise, maintained her intensity on return and continued to keep Pigato under scoreboard pressure. The 6-3 second set sealed a deserved title and confirmed the strength of her run through the tournament.
Timofeeva’s path to the trophy was marked by steady progress and impressive composure. Before the final, she defeated Lucia Cortez Llorca, Jennifer Ruggeri, Susan Bandecchi and Alice Rame, dropping only limited momentum across the week. Pigato also produced a strong campaign in Chiasso, overcoming Polona Hercog, Katarina Zavatska and Samira De Stefano on her way to the championship match.
For the Axion Open 2026, the final between the top two seeds offered a fitting conclusion to a week of international-level women’s tennis. Hosted at Tennis Club Chiasso, the event once again underlined its role within the ITF World Tennis Tour, combining competitive depth, strong organisation and a growing identity in the regional and international tennis landscape.
The tournament was supported by its institutional and sporting partners, including Swiss Tennis, the ITF World Tennis Tour, Associazione Regionale Tennis Ticino, Repubblica e Cantone Ticino – DECS and Servizio Autoambulanza Mendrisiotto, together with the commercial and technical partners who contribute to the development of the event.
